Highlights of student teaching

I can not believe that am almost done with my student teaching! I have loved it sooo much! I have two more weeks left in my second grade classroom. Hightlights have been - my friendship unit in the kindergarten. How darling! Part of it was learning to like yourself - so I had them paint self portraits. The cummalative activity was to have all of their pictures in our classroom friend "ship". So cute!

The best part of kindergarten was the surprise party that the students planned - they jumped out and everything! I was also spoiled with little teacher gifts - pencils, stickers, erasers, and most important - pain reliever! I loved their sweet cards!

This week in second grade we studied plants. We planted seeds in little cups. Then we also made a paper sunflower. We compared the life cycle of a plant to that of a story: having a beginning, middle and end. They did such a good job!

All of this teaching makes me so anxious for my own classroom! I can't wait!!!

Me & My Story

I sit tonight, pricking myself. No, I am not into self harm - I am just checking my blood sugar. I am remarkably low tonight. So, I eat just enough sugar to raise it. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the age of 26. Then - it was like my world crashed - really. I felt like I would my life had literally ended. Maybe that was a bit dramatic - but really - I mean, I was never going to be normal again.

It really all started my first year of college. I skipped my period for an entire year. Really - not pregnant or anything - it just stopped. I was kind of afraid to tell my doctor - i mean everyone knows why a girl misses her period! Turns out my doctor told me I have polycystic ovarian syndrome (pcos), and not to worry about it until I want to have children. Okay - I can handle that....

For years though, I asked - my doctor, nurse practitioner, etc, if there is anything more I should be concerned about with pcos. Always - the answer was that I may have a hard time getting pregnant. Until one weekend - I went kayaking and my legs went numb - and stayed that way for the rest of the day. Warning bells went off - and I went to the doctor on Monday. A simple blood test told me that I was diabetic. This was a surprise to me - I had no history of diabetes in my family - and I was in my twenties. Now, I know, I have been overweight my entire life - but I was also active. Even now the stereotype of type 2 diabetics come to mind - lazy couch potatos with little knowledge of basic healthcare. I exercised nearly everyday.

It turns out that pcos is a common precursor to diabetes. My sister was diagnosed with PCOS around the same time as my diagnosis of diabetes. Her doctor put her on diabetic medication ( the same one I was prescribed) immediatly. Immediatly? I waited 10 years!

So, yes I am frustated that I was not on medication for those years. Frustrated that I have to check my blood sugars and that I will never be normal again......

Free! Pass it on!

Ok, this has been going around to most of you already, but I got this from Christy, and now I am passing it on to you. Hopefully I have 5 people who follow my blog. Hah!

The first five people to respond to this post will get something made by me! My choice for you. This offer does have some restrictions and limitations:

1. I make no guarantees that you will like what I make!

2. What I create will be just for you.

3. It’ll be done this year. {translation: you may be waiting a little while}

4. You have no clue what it’s going to be … it may be cards, a poem, a bookmark, something yummy or a complete surprise to you (and me!) … who knows? Not you, that’s for sure!

5. I reserve the right to do something extremely strange.

6. Most importantly, you must offer the same deal on your blog - the first 5 people to comment on your blog (or if you do not have a blog, Facebook, etc.) get something made by YOU!

So have fun with it and enjoy giving of yourself and your talents!

Totally random

Here are some pictures of the kids I live with. I have been having so much fun with them! Its great to play! The two year old kind of finds himself in trouble a lot... so, I provide the comic relief for mommy. The baby, well, I have not been able to take a good photo of her yet - she just moves too much!

So, I have to laugh! I love listening to five year olds talk. Mostly its about their love of legos or of their love of pokemon.... but lately their have been these love triangles in the kindergarten. Their conversation went like this.... boy 1 " I am going to send _____ flowers." Boy 2 "oh, I am going to send ____ flowers too!" Boy 1"You are going to send her dead flowers, I am going to send her flowers she will like!" Where do they come up with this, and where can I record this for posterity?

I have a new calling - ward camp director for the young women. I am so excited, and apprehensive at the same time. Like, am I a good example for them? Is girls camp the same in Utah as it is in Pennsylvania? I guess we will see!

Instructions: Google the phrase (including the quotes) "[your first name] needs" and write down the first 10 results... no editing!! :)

This made me laugh.....

2.Peggy needs help selecting some fish. Can you help her? (Disagree - Peggy can select her own fish!)
3.Peggy needs an evil twin. ( would I still be accountable for evil peggy? Mmmm...?)
4. Maybe Peggy Needs A Little Help From “Laura Bush”*. (Why would I need her help?)
5. Peggy needs to develop a task force to review the assessment to extractspecific information and develop specific recommendation.
(huh?)
6. Peggy needs a home for the holidays...
7. Peggy needs your pearls...
8. I think Peggy needs to talk to the people at "Picture Loans".
9. Peggy needs as many "walkers" as she can get.
10. Peggy needs more than a makeover, she needs an overhaul!

What do you think Peggy needs?

Happy Valentine's Day

I love Valentine's Day! It is so sweet! This year is positively the best, best, BEST! I am student teaching in a year round school. My program requires me to spend half of my time (like 6 weeks a semester) in kindergarten, the other in 2nd grade. So, with year round school, I was in 2nd grade until the 27th of January. They do not come back on track until Feb. 23rd, missing Valentine's Day. So, we had Valentine's Day in 2nd grade on January 27th. (That is my first valentine's day). Being in kindergarten, I teach morning and an afternoon session. So, I get Valentine's Day X 3!!! It is so sweet! I love little Valentine's! How lucky am I???
